with Soul
For a client in western North Carolina, we were challenged to not only transform the exterior of an outbuilding of a 5 acre farm but to consider why they wanted to add more color to the farm setting that hosts various workshops.
In this case, the increasing presence of bears kept eating the honey and embryonic bees thereby destroying the revenue stream not only for honey but also for cut flowers and vegetables they had been selling at local farmer's markets. The plants, without the bees, were not being pollinated. The end result was essentially green, non-producing beds.
Taking Grant Wood's 1930 American Gothic as our inspiration, we designed this 30' x 5' wraparound mural that leaned into the bear problem without demonizing them. Showing the honey bee and the bear as a "couple" achieved that goal. The image on the right is abstracted towering sunflowers and beehives with abstracted bees. The blue marks are abstracted blue ghost fireflies indigenous to southeast US.
Increasing real estate development has severely encroached upon their previous domain causing not only increased density but a lack of food source. Except for honey.
While the farm managers seek solutions for repelling bears (good luck with that!), the mural adds beauty and whimsy to a previously forlorn surface.
Art is good at that! (Especially mine!)
